This website serves as the research body accompanying the exhibition Have No Doubt of the Omnipotence of a Free People, presented by Catinca Tabacaru Gallery. Conceived as an open, evolving resource, it brings together a constellation of historical materials that shed light on the complex and largely unexplored relationship between Romania and Zimbabwe, with particular focus on Romania’s involvement in the liberation of Zimbabwe during the late 20th century.
The purpose of this platform is to make accessible a wide range of never-before-seen documents, correspondence, state communications, and newspaper clippings that trace the political, diplomatic, cultural, and ideological exchanges between the two countries. These materials—many of which have remained inaccessible or uncirculated until now—provide crucial insight into the ways international solidarity, socialist foreign policy, and anti-colonial movements intersected during this period. By placing these documents in the public sphere, the website aims not only to contextualize the exhibition, but also to encourage renewed discussions around the global networks of support that shaped liberation struggles across the African continent.
Our research draws from three distinct archival collections: The Diplomatic Archive of the Romanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, The Herald Archive, and Fototeca Comunismului Românesc. Each of these archives offers its own perspective, depth, and fragment of the broader narrative. Together, they form a cross-referenced repository that allows readers, researchers, and the general public to follow the shifting diplomatic alignments, educational initiatives, cultural exchanges, and military or ideological support Romania offered Zimbabwe throughout the years leading up to and following independence.
